Sunshine Mesh Dish Cloth

The Sunshine brand mesh dish cloth is an approximately 13 x 13.5 inch (33 x 33 cm) nylon cloth made in Japan using a special weaving process designed to resist friction and provide durability, according to the packaging translated by Google Translate. All edges are sewn to prevent fraying in a way that does not increase the thickness of the edges over the thickness of the rest of the cloth.

This product stands out not only for its unique weave and flat finished edges, but also for using nylon instead of polyester. There are a lot of other brands in the mesh dish cloth category online now, but they all seem to use polyester, which in my experience does not age as well as nylon.

I just started using this product after having a similar mesh cloth from Korea for many years. I like this style of mesh cloth for washing dishes because the plastic fabric doesn’t hold water or absorb soap like sponges are known to do. You can use both solid bar soap or liquid dishwashing soap with this cloth, and you only need a small amount of soap to work up a good lather and clean a sink of dishes. This cloth is a little larger than my old one, which gives it a little more mass that makes it easier to grip. Whether polyester or nylon, the mesh starts off stiff and softens over time. In my experience, this type of cloth gets better with time for this reason.

I briefly tried using part of an old Salux nylon wash cloth as a dish cloth and the problem with that was that it lacked thickness and was hard to hold on to while dishwashing for this reason. It might work if you sewed the Salux wash cloth into a sponge shape, but I never got around to trying this.

I’d also really like to try this Kushiro Fish Net Scrubber one day. I haven’t been able to find an online source for either the Sunshine nylon mesh dish cloth or the Kushiro fish net scrubber.
